Weird characters in man pages - possible CHARSET problem??

I'm getting strange characters showing when I view man pages. Often I get "â" characters where I think I should be seeing apostrophes etc.

I think it's something to do with the LESSCHARSET environment variable. I've tried setting LESSCHARSET=latin1 but then I get "â<80><98>" instead of just "â" characters.

Output from locale is as follows:

LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Anyone got any ideas as to how I go about fixing this?

Thanks

Try running dmesg, or cat /var/log/boot.msg (or whatever it's called in Fedora). If there is a problem loading fonts on boot, you may find more info in the logs.

surely this isn't a font problem but a character set issue? As far as I am aware I don't have any issues with loading fonts
