typing other language characters

any know how I can type characters in other non-english languages?
specifically I'm trying to type hebrew letters in the new OpenOffice.org (Beta) I have the fonts, I have the little icon
in gnome that's supposed to switch the keyboard layout, but when I type I still get english characters. this problem is not really unique to hebrew and should be the same for anyone out there who can type non-english.

any help gladly appreciated..

Options -> Language Settings -> Languages (works for me with Polish).
