Sound problem

Hello,
I'm having problems with the sound on my system. I have run sndconfig and receive the following:

The Intel Corp.|unknown device ?
? 8086:24c5 is not supported.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks,

Bill

Well, what kind of soundcard is it? More details gets better responses. Soundcard type, make, model, etc?

There is actually not a sound card in the system. This is a Systemax PC with a pentium 4 processor. The first screen I get after running sndconfig is:

Model: Intel Corp.|unknown
device 8086:24c5

Is there any other way I can get more info?

Many PCs have sound cards built into the mother boards. They are treated the same as if there was a descrete sound card. I've done this with other systems in the past successfully. This time I'm not able to find the answer.

No crap, i'm confused now..

Can you go over why your running sndconfig when you don't have a soundcard in your system? That just doesn't make sense to me.

That device is just something that isn't supported or it cant get the correct information from.
What do you get from dmesg or lspci, that's if its a PCI device. Are there any other major devices that seem to not work, besides the error your getting when running sndconfig when you don't have a sound card? Maybe its just finding the next closest thing that might resemble a sound card but isn't one on your system....

Okay, if you look at the back of your system, do you see connections to attach speakers? Does your hardware specs say you have sound onboard, etc?

There are attachments at the back of the system. Infact, I'm running a dual boot system here. The other half is Uhg Windows 2000. The sound system works just fine there. I ran dmesg and got quite a lot of output. Do you want me to post that?

The PC uses Intel's Desktop board D845pece which uses the Intel 845G chipset. I hit Intel's site for the mother board and came up with the audio info as follows:

Audio subsystem for AC '97 processing using the Analog Devices AD1981B codec

Is there any other info that will help?

Regards,

Bill

Yup, that's a popular soundcard that has been asked and answered many times here. Try doing a search on that soundcard here, I'm sure you will turn results.

Here ya go.. over 200 hits.. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...der=descending

Also check out Alsa's sound page for drivers for this sound card. www.alsa-project.org

Don't hesitate to come back if you have any other questions, run into any problems, read over and over and still have no clue like I do at times when reading documentation to get something working..
