RPM problem

I'm new to Linux. Using Red Hat 7. I'm trying to install some list server software, and first need to install the make program in order to compile the software. I downloaded make-3.79.1-5.src.rpm and am now attempting to install it. I've tried from the Gnome RPM and it appears to work, but it doesn't get installed. From command line, I use rpm -ivh make*, it again appears to work, but when I query it using rpm -q make*, it says that it's not installed.

Any insight would help a lot. Thanks.

just try rpm -q make. you don't need the * at the end.

I tried that with no success. rpm -q make -- says it's not installed.

aha! you're installing from source (which is why it's .src.rpm file). in redhat, that was installed correctly, but it's not where you want it. instead, it's in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES. i think in order to use it, you need to run make on it, which isn't really practical when you're installing make for the first time, is it?

i'd suggest just to get the make RPM itself... make-3.79.1-5.rpm should probably be the name. make sure you don't have any .src extension in the actual filename.

you can get the make rpm (and more) from www.rpmfind.net. on the list of stuff that comes up, get the RedHat i386 file... it's highlighted some funky color (green, i think)

hope that helps
