hi, my linux is running kind of slow and i dont really know why, im pretty sure its not my hardware, but i just installed the new nvidia drivers, they seem to work well, the splash screen is coming up and tuxracer runs smoothly. right now i have a terminal window, xemacs, gaim, mozilla and xmms open, i wouldnt think that would cause too much of a slow down, but im pretty new to linux. my mozilla and other things load slower than they did before and when i type in gaim it gets really slow and the cursor will move like 10 seconds afer i type a button. are there any tweaks i could do to get a little better performance or anything?
Acid, no disrespect, but I wish you would stop saying that...there is nothing wrong with KDE, on my system it is running nice and fast. Yes, I also use WindowMaker, but KDE is just what people need to be convinced that Linux can ideed replace windows.
The fact that it sometimes is slow seems to be more of a distro fault than the fault of KDE.
Also, most people run machines faster than 1GHz, with plenty RAM. Therefore, in distros that do it properly, KDE will run fine and provide a satisfying user experience.
There seem to be a lot of wierd performance problems lately. This isn't a problem that affects all of Linux, and it's not KDE or Qt apps regardless of what acid says. Run top in a terminal and when it slows down, see if you can see if anything is eating CPU time
