Problems with sound on Gentoo...

I have some truble with sound on my gentoo box... i use alsa and arts, and get crashes on amarok when i don't play anything for a while... also other software, such as audacity, don't see any sound devices at all so i can't use those at all... what could be the problem?

Personally, I got sick of weird things going on so I just disabled arts and use plain old alsa for everything. Seems to work fine.
