gentoo/rhythmbox sound problems

I have just installed gentoo 2004.3 stage 1
and I am quite happy with the system...with a few major exceptions

I am running gnome and rhythmbox will not work
it gives me the complaint that
'dev/dsp doesnt exist'

i have looked in /dev/ and dsp is there; albiet it is a link to ~sound/dsp
i have been been able to run xmms with ALSA and all works there
but the sound problems seem to exptend to gnome sound events etc

my user is part of the audio group
I am sorry for the vagueness of my question: I am a linux semi-newbie and a gentoo newbie

btw this may be unconnected, but the option for 'propeties' is grayed out on the file menu in rhythmbox

>ls -l /dev/dsp
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Feb 14 00:29 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp
