Problems login as root on Fedora release 8

I'm using a Fedora release 8, Kernel 2.6.23.1-42.fc8 and I'm having problems login in. When I enter my user (I'm using root) it wont even ask for the password it just asks again for the user, again and again.

Any idea of what may be going wrong here?

Thanks

Can you log in as your regular user & su to root? Besides a password problem, maybe the access.conf doesn't allow logging in from that terminal, so su to root might work.

boot into single user mode from the old fedora 8 install cd ( first cd ) or the dvd
That is unless the boot is password protected .

I don't have the Fedora CDs, is it possible to get to the console mode in any other way without the Fedora CDs?

if all else fails on a different computer download and burn a knoppix or ubuntu live cd and boot into that .Mount the fedora 8 drive and look at the logs . I use a knoppix cd for this .
