Printing japanese characters from Emacs...

Using Emacs MULE (multi language environment) I am able to type kanji and hiragana and katakana but, my printer does not print it correctly. The printer either prints boxes or numbers and letters. Also if I save the buffer to file, I cannot view correctly in any program but emacs. Any help would be appreciated for a nihongo gakusei. Thank you.
