NO Sound When Boot into KDE 31 - error inside

Hi all - for some reason i have no sound. I have compiled it within my kernel. So not sure what it is. Error I get is as follows:

Sound server information message:

Error while initializing the sound driver

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (ls a directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Could this most likely be something didnt get compiled in my driver?

I am currently running kernel 2.5.59 - but got the same error on 2.4.20.

Using the OSS sound system (Same error with also)

/dev/dsp is there and has proper rights for users to access it. My users are in the audio group.

Sound card is onboard and is the following type:

Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio (rev 5)

Using the intel intel8x0 driver in the kernel and also used it with Alsa. I have seached the boards and google, and though I found similar errors, most did have the (ls a directory) problem so none of what I found has helped much.

Can anyone please help? Let me know what info you may need.

I would definitely try "modprobe <driver name>" again. Then I'd do an "insmod <driver name>". Make sure that it took by "lsmod" which will list all your installed modules. Verify your permissions are right for /dev/dsp by "ls -l /dev/dsp". Make sure that your users have rw permissions. Also for /dev/audio and /dev/mixer too. Hope this helps.

im guessing sound works fine as root?
if so then try:
Code:
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
remember to issue both of these as root, this should fix your problems with sound and other users
