login through terminal

im having trouble loggin in through the terminal it keeps saying my password is incorrect even though when i log in through my configure icon it connects me as root
i run mandrake 10.2

My question would be, why are you logging in as root anyways? Create another regular user, setup sudo or su when needed and login as your user, not root.

im tryign to install display drivers and it says i must be logged in as root

So you can login as root thru the GUI but not at a console? If so, check your /etc/securetty file and make sure root isn't listed to have console login access disabled..
