login as root through terminal!

sometimes i need to login to a terminal as root, if i load gnome terminal and type login, put root in as username, and password in, it yells at me and tells me i've used an incorrect login.

i'm aware of CTRL+SHIFT+F1 to open a new session, but can't work out how to get back to the gui after doing this i'm very new, scoured google and haven't found anything to help..

can anyone out there suggest why this is happening? and how i can get around it... i'm in RH9 btw. in red hat 7 it worked fine.. but that was around a year ago, and my head has been crammed with many other things since then...

thanks

Whilst logged in to your current session as your normal user account

To temporarily change your shell user to super user type $ su -

To close this, type $ exit
