every browser i have used when there is a - in a url it doesn't load for me.. using firefox and konqueror. If it isn't a linux problem it must be every browser, or maybe it's slackware. And I think it's when the - is before the first dot. try http://spot-.deviantart.com/

Hmm. I'm getting this too. Firefox on my Windows machine works fine, but neither Mozilla or Konqureror in Linux resolve the host name. I also tried to run it through a couple of web-based traceroute sites and got error messages saying that an illegal character was being used.
Perhaps there's some kind of encoding problem involved here?
so thatīs what you mean.
Well i canīt load spot-.devianart.com, i get a "could not be found" message, i am using Mozilla 1.6
so maybe the page is down or something.
Plus, i went to google.com/linux and i saved the page as "spot-.devianart.html" and i can open it fine.
About what David The H is saying i have no idea.
Anyway, if what you guys are saying is true, well it is sure a weird thing, and i would want to know why it doesnīt work
i also tried to open the page with lynx and this is the output:
Code:
[electronkz@blackbox electronkz]$ lynx http://spot-.devianart.com
Looking up spot-.devianart.com
Unable to locate remote host spot-.devianart.com.
Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.
lynx: Can't access startfile http://spot-.devianart.com/
[electronkz@blackbox electronkz]$
I searched google but i canīt find any usefull information about this.
Again, are you sure the page is working?
I know the page is up, I have a windows computer too... and it loads fine. But this guy is saying it has been fixed in the latest mozilla? Guess I'll wait and see if firefox fixes it..

Seems it's just all the browsers on my slack 10 won't - neither does mozilla 1.7.3 (except it works for Tinkster).
dig, nslookup, both find it - whereas ping and traceroute don't find it
I think the answer is here in RFC 1035
The labels must follow the rules for ARPANET host names. They must
start with a letter, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior
characters only letters, digits, and hyphen. There are also some
restrictions on the length. Labels must be 63 characters or less.

Ie, that 'spot-' is an invalid host name.
So why does the host name work on Windows then? Does it do something different? It uses the same dns lookup system, doesn't it?
(I'm not sure I follow how it all works completely.)
