Consider, for example, what you would have to go through to upgrade and patch all of the software on your Windows machine. Could take weeks of downloading, filling out forms on webpages, installing, paying for upgrades, etc. etc.

Then consider how easy it is in most Linux distros to upgrade software. Automated tools like Red Carpet can download and patch everything in a matter of minutes. It's even easier with stuff like apt-get or ipkg. Mandrake has Mandrake Update.

Think about the power of the command-line interface, shell scripting, etc. - stuff you never get in Windows. I'm not anywhere close to a shell guru, but you can run single commands that do hugely complicated administrative stuff.

All that and more! I'll take that over being able to easily change my splash screen any day.
This was what I was going to say after reading through all the threads, too late I guess

One thing, that has to do with frill more than speed, does not characterize "what a pain it is to do things in Linux". Without throwing out examples, I'm sure you know that this single "example" is more taken out of text than the truth behind it. The way this is stated sounds a lot like the "TCO" bs page MS built to gain more "weenies" in the server market. They take a single object and attack it, compare it to something that was built to work a specific way in win, and expect the reader (me) to believe that justifies "TCO". Even if I didn't use Linux as my OS of choice I'd be able to see through that propaganda comparison chart.

Anyway, enough of my rant, I do forsee this as a "LNX vs MSFT" thread, and I'm not really helping

Cool

It's not all programs in Linux that are hard to install. It depends a lot of the programers. Take a look that most programs for Linux compile and install from source in 3 commands, only that (configure, make and make install). But it's not everyone who does nice simple things like that. Somes ask to download 5 other libraries, make menu config, make dep, make modules, make modules_install and god knows what more to make lol.

Other programs, like the Super Nintendo emulator, snes9x, is practicaly an "exe". No need to compile or install. Simple type ./snes9x <option> romname.zip.

Linux could be easier to use, but there're many developers around who are compilers freaky... . But I like Linux over Windows applications anyway, but sometimes, sometimes it is not really necessary so many complications...

Yeah, like MasterC said, we really really don't need yet another tired M$ vs Linux thread, if you do want to debate that there are MANY existing threads, and you'd be thanked for reading through those and contributing there, thanks
