Just an example of what a pain simple stuff in linux can be

Ok I heard this on the screensavers, a caller wanted to change the splash screen for Mozilla 1.3 in windows. just put a bitmap in the folder where Mozilla is, I think the base folder. Call it mozilla.bmp, simple enough. Well in linux you have to recompile it to do the same thing. Recompile the source for a around 30 sec splash screen.

markus1982 05-02-2003 12:27 PM

What are you trying to say? That in Linux you always have to work to get the same functionality like in M$ Windows? Well if you don't like Linux why do you use it?

I personally use Windows just for some crappy Onlinebanking application and for everything else Linux. Knoppix to be exact (based on Debian unstable). For servers I use Debian (stable). At work I am forced to use Windows XP ... I often wish I would have a console and could just kill those crappy applications.

If you like Windows and are not ready to try out something more powerful then stay with Windows, otherwise choose linux :-)

trickykid 05-02-2003 12:36 PM

And I wouldn't waste my time changing the splash screen in Windows if it took me 2 seconds to change, when the splash screen only lasts for what, no more than 10 or more seconds..
So changing in Linux wouldn't matter either. I can care less about a splash screen, its the program itself and if it works is all I care about.

Lets not start another Windows vs. Linux thread please. If so, it will get closed really quickly to warn you. We already have plenty of those going around.

Crashed_Again 05-02-2003 12:40 PM

Umm...what exactly is the splash screen?

Edward78 05-02-2003 12:44 PM

This is not a linux vs. windows thread, the point is you can just put a file in a folder to do something in the windows version of mozilla, & you have to recompile the code in the linux version. Forget wht it does, just what you have to do to get there. I am not a windows lover, nor a linux hater. Just think about what I said here.

So this is a Mozilla problem rather than a Linux problem.

Come to think of it... I don't get a splash screen when I load Mozilla. I just get a browser window.

Yes, maybe you have to recompile in linux to even have a splash screen.

acid_kewpie 05-02-2003 12:52 PM

I can see what you're saying here, but this really has nothing to do with linux / windows. There is presuambly no reason that the splashscreen couldn't be changed in linux the same as windows, it's simply not been done like that. i guess the people in charge of the linux branch didn't think it was worth bothering with, but i guarentee it'd be just as trivial on either platform is the feature is impltemented.

I have to recompile my kernel or mozilla?

If the default build options for Mozilla on Linux doesn't include a splash screen I honestly fail to see how it's a Linux problem. Sounds more like a Mozilla issue and should be taken up with the Mozilla team.

Edward78 05-02-2003 01:01 PM

No no sorry, you have to recompile Mozilla.

trickykid 05-02-2003 01:18 PM

Come to think of it, yah, I don't get a splash screen in Linux but on Windows I do..

Me personally, like I said earlier, I could give a flying hoot what the splash screen is or does. I like no splash screen though in Linux, makes it load faster, cause there's one less thing to load.

But I have to agree with acid and anyone else that has pointed this out, its not a matter of Linux vs Windows ease of change issue, its all upon Mozilla and how they programmed/designed it to work. I'm sure the Mozilla team could program to change their splash screen (if there is one) in Linux to make it easier to change like in Windows.

I learned to not listen to everything they say on ScreenSavers.. ;) They aren't always right on the Linux/*nix stuff from what I've seen.

Arual the Wyrd 05-02-2003 07:26 PM

Splash screens suck anyway

Whitehat 05-02-2003 08:34 PM

Blah Blah Blah ....freakin' Blah....

Find something better to do.

-----------------------------

By the way markus1982, you can kill tasks in Windows. You need the "tlist" and "kill" command. Both available in the resource kit.

Peace out... :D

They work like a champ :)

wapcaplet 05-02-2003 09:15 PM

Just because one thing is easier in Windows doesn't mean everything is easier in Windows :)

Consider, for example, what you would have to go through to upgrade and patch all of the software on your Windows machine. Could take weeks of downloading, filling out forms on webpages, installing, paying for upgrades, etc. etc.

Then consider how easy it is in most Linux distros to upgrade software. Automated tools like Red Carpet can download and patch everything in a matter of minutes. It's even easier with stuff like apt-get or ipkg. Mandrake has Mandrake Update.

Think about the power of the command-line interface, shell scripting, etc. - stuff you never get in Windows. I'm not anywhere close to a shell guru, but you can run single commands that do hugely complicated administrative stuff.

All that and more! I'll take that over being able to easily change my splash screen any day.

BryanMC 05-02-2003 10:22 PM

I type cs in my console for half-life deidicated server in linux (with all my preferences on starting map etc...)

the original command is like 3 lines long.... Not hard at all....

My opinion is stuff makes more sense in linux.... (maybe not easier at first but once you understand what makes linux work, you are almost instantly a guru... i'm not of course ;) )

:D
