Gaming, Gentoo or Redhat?
Hey everyone.
I have a question.
I would like to setup a Linux box which is dedicated to gaming, but will not deprive me of general use. For the moment, Red Hat Linux is working fine for me but, I would like to get more out of my system. I'm not interested in trying Gentoo's to learn because, I can easily try Debrian for that. But I am interested in hearing opinions with Gentoo's.
If there is anyone out there who has used both Red Hat and Gentoos, I'm interested in hearing your opinions between the two. I understand and respect the enjoyability of learning Linux by using Gentoo's, but I respectfully ask you to respect the scope of my request.

From my studies, I am finding better results from RH FC2 over Gentoos. Considering I am using RH 9, RH FC2 has my over all attention. If someone would like to say otherwise, be quick.
I would definatly recommend one of the following distro's for gaming.
Slackware
Gentoo
Debian.
They are all pretty much vanilla (they use original packages not modified like redhat) Gentoo is completly compiled with optimizations for your pc, so in theory it will run faster than a package based distro. Debian has apt, which is awsome in itself, and Slackware is just speedy.

Your information is most inspiring and welcomed. I had someone suggest FreeBSD (though it is a UNIX kernel). Is there any information which could back up that Distro to be equal or better then then ones you listed?
Again, thank you very much for your submitted information. You got me only minutes from me downloading the Fedora Core 2.
Might want to try a different distro first if you're in any rush to play as the Gentoo install will take you quite a while (unless you do a stage 3 which kind of defeats the purpose of Gentoo in my opinion). Try every distro you can. Some might work better for you than they do for someone else.

I understand Gentoo would require compiling much like Debrian. I been using RH for a bit, and I think I'm close enough as I will ever be to move on. However, a very good reason why I am fearful of going near Debrian is because it is the hardest (from what I have heard). Though difficulty does not necessarily sway me from using it, compatibility to my hardware does. This is absolutely nothing like working your rear end off for a result that completely disappoints you. My last experience with Gentoos has proved itself to be compatible with my motherboard. However, distributions such as Mandrake 9 and above are not supportive. My options to which distributions I can use is limited, which is why I focused on Gentoo's. Your supportive suggestions are most welcome. Thanks again.
Debian does not require compiling. The new installer has automatic hardware detection and the install is pretty straight-forward.
If you want the fastest system possible, go with Gentoo. The downside of that route is the compile times. But if you have the time and patience, it will make a good system.
