fat /home?

Hi everyone,

Planning to have a dual boot with Windows XP and Mandrake Linux 10-1.0 or some Gentoo-based distro, I have put all my data in a separate partition, which I set to the FAT32 file system, so I can access the data from Linux too.

Then there is the Windows XP OS partition, where programs are, which I have only resized (so it is still NTFS, but this is not very relevant).

The question is: I know in Linux I'll have a /home directory for my personal files. It would be perfect if I could have this FAT32 partition as my /home directory but perhaps Linux will only accept a Ext2 or Ext3 partition to be set as /home.

I would like to know if that would be the case before partitioning my hard disk and installing the second operating system, so I would mostly appreciate any suggestion as how to proceed. Yes or not would be perfect

Thank you very much for reading or for helping or for trying to help!
Cheers, xinelo

Bad idea ... permissions and flags will be screwed up.

There is no distinction between different owners on
fat, the "ownership" is temporary and assigned at mount-
time rather than being hooked into the filesystem. Also,
all files will be "executable" (have x permissions).

Just don't even think about it ;)

Cheers,
Tink

thanks

thanks tink for your clear answer

i guess what I'll do is to store files temporarily in my /home directory and then move them to the fat partition when i don't need them anymore

thanks again, cheers, bye

Why not make your /home EXT2, and use something like Explore2fs on the Windows side?
