The answer is basically "not at all":
a) The standard C library is a means of interacting with the kernel (it isn't the kernel itself)
b) Great effort is made to insure that new versions of libc are typically backward-compatible with older versions

PS:
It would, of course, be unwise to replace or upgrade any major component of any OS without:
a) testing the upgrade in a non-production environment before deploying it on your production system
b) scheduling a system reboot as part of your upgrade procedure
