screen/resolution problems with games on my debian

Hi! Just recently I converted from Mandrake to Debian (2.4.27) and I am having a few issues with some of the games. For instance, Tuxracer worked just fine on my Mandrake, but now that I am running Debian, when the game starts, the screen is all messed up, with strange horizonal lines everywhere. I can't even make out the picture. I have no idea why this does what it does, but this is not the only game. I have the same problem with armatron and tuxtyping, just to name a few. Does anyone know how I can go about fixing this? Is it a resolution problem with the game and a setting I have? I am lost and clueless. lol. Thanks for your help!
