You should be able to get the same performance with X as with M$ drivers. I would suggest going to the manufacturer's site and getting the exact refresh rates and applying them in X. My personal experience is actually achieving better performance with X. The max size I can use with M$ drivers was 1024x768 but running 1280x1024 in X at 24.
