Screen resolution of X in debian

I have a laptop with an 800x600 screen and debian is running in 640x480. How can I get it to run in 800x600 mode? There's no XF86Config file anywhere.

Debian uses XF86Config-4 which you'll find in /etc/X11. To reconfigure X do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.

I still can't get it to go into 800x600 and I even told it not to go into 640X480. Perhaps I should lower the colors, I'm gonna try that ...

yaaay! That was the trick. But with windows 98se I could run 800x600 in 24 bit colors. I bet I set it up badly. Oh well, meets n00b standards now

You should be able to get the same performance with X as with M$ drivers. I would suggest going to the manufacturer's site and getting the exact refresh rates and applying them in X. My personal experience is actually achieving better performance with X. The max size I can use with M$ drivers was 1024x768 but running 1280x1024 in X at 24.
