Debian 3.1 Low Screen Resolution.

Hey guys,,
I just installed Debian Sarge on my computer and I am getting a very low screen resolution 800 x 600 max. I have a Sony 420 GS monitor and a Rage 128 GL -16Mb video card. When I am using Ubuntu, the screen resolution goes up to 1600-1200. As far as I know Ubuntu is debian based, do you guys happen to know how I can get my screen resolution higher? Thanks a lot for your help...
