Quake III Demo Resolution

I can't seem to change my resolution in the Quake III Demo. When I change it in the settings and hit 'Accept' it exits the game, goes to the desktop, and changes my desktop resolution to whatever the game was (default 640x480). Very strange.
At this point, if i move my mouse off the screen, my KDE session just ends itself, logs out, and starts the session again. I've never seen this before.
I know that I didn't have this problem when I was running Gnome, but I wanted to try out KDE and I've liked it alot so far.
Is there any way to change the game resolution in a text file somehow? Or via command?

Use control-alt + or - to change resolution.
Edit your /home/youraccount/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg
seta r_mode "4" <----- you must have this.

Hope you didn't add the quake line, but corrected it...

Here's a part of my xfree config:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "** NVIDIA (generic) [nv]"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
