ATi 9800 Config question

Okay, I have a question about WHEN to run fglxconfig during the installation of the Linux ATi drivers.

1. download the ati drivers. get the xfree 4.3 ones.
2. open terminal.
3. su
4. cd into directory containing the drivers just downloaded
5. rpm -Uh --force fglrx****.rpm
6. ?????????? Do I run it now? Or go straight to the next step??
7. cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
8. sh make.sh
9. cd ..
10. sh make_install.sh
11. fglrxconfig
12. rename /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to xorg.conf (backup your xorg.conf first)
13. reboot or restart x server
14. open terminal
15. glxinfo it should say near the top direct rendering YES.

If you missed it, it was at step 6. After the actuall drivers install, do I run it? Or do I make the custom module with the sh make_install.sh command and THEN run fglxconfig.

Thanks

Hi there,

I usually run the config program AFTER creating and installing the custom module. It just ensures that your build and install process went correctly. Infact, you should do the command: "lsmod" to make sure you can see both the fglrx and agpgart modules loaded. If they are loaded then I would go ahead with the config program.

After running sh make.sh in the /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod dir, I get this error :

ATI module generator V 2.0
==========================
initializing...
Error:
XFree86 drm includes at /lib/modules/2.6.8-24.5-default/build/include/../drivers/char/drm do not fit this driver.
This driver is designed to only work with X4.1.0 or higher.
You can match this by getting Linux kernel 2.4.8 or higher.
andy@linux:/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod>

I do have the source kernel installed and such, but I still get this... What do I do?

SuSE 9.2 Pro

Trying with ATi's Xfree 4.3.0 version.

You need to patch the module source and rebuild the module - it didn't build properly.

Go to rage3d.com forums, there's a guide there and some patch files.

For a replacement for a 9800pro I would buy a 6600GT, might as well upgrade slightly
