LFS - How to Use CD to Boot from USB HD

I am currently running Gentoo. I want to use it to build LFS on an external USB hard disk. I want to keep LFS on the USB disk, and run it from there, until I am comfortable replacing Gentoo with it. My computer is not capable of booting from USB.

How can I set up GRUB to use the same kernel it is currently using on /dev/hda1 , but make the root filesystem be on /dev/sda1 (the USB drive)? Do I have to do anything special, or can I just replace the root= line in grub.conf with the USB partition?

thanks,

if you are wanting to boot from the usb device, then the root of the os has to be on the usb device.
the system would need to boot from hda .. but not the gentoo / the gentoo /boot as it's own partition, then install the lfs kernel into there, after building onto the usb device.

when you want to boot into the lfs system the device would have to be plugged in and the lfs kernel selected.

btw, this is a limited usb install this way, it would not boot on any other machine so it wouldn't be usefull as a rescue media.
