zlib has numerous DEPs How to upgrade?? replace it

more fun,

tried to tar.gz the newer zlib 1.2.3... nope doesn't install, build files and sits there while it keeps it's 1.1.4-8 intact... can't rpm-e the old one dependents list is HUGE? ok, little help here... must be someway to demolish the old crud RedHat wizardgoofs installed behind my back on the install because they are sooo much smarter than me... wish they wouldn't HELP so much on this server... I need to do a fresh install of the newer needed zlib and libxml2 without deastroying the box... sheesh...
thanks a flame to RH 4 shore.

Code:
wget http://www.qmailtoaster.com/download...-1.0.2.src.rpm
rpmbuild --rebuild zlib-1.2.3-1.0.2.src.rpm
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/zlib*
