while installing RHEl version 3, it is showing no hard drive found

hi,please tell me the solution. while installing red hat linux enterprise version 3, it is showing "[B]as no hard drive found.please add drive.after that it is showing fast ether net found".I have no internet connection. My system configurations are :

1.SATA 2 hard drive (160GB)
2. INTEL PENTIUM D 2.6 GHz.
3. mother board intel dektop original.

In drive configuraions, there is no legacy or enhanced modes(only auto and no modes). The BIOS setup is difficult to change. It is somewhat new compared with older ones.

Please tell the solution as soon as possible. I am eagerly waiting for any body's sugestion.

If you don't want to load any special driver modules then check the bios setup
for a point called sata operations or called similar and you'll have to set it to ATA/AHCI cause RAID or SATA won't work w/o a module disk.
But
Quote:
mother board intel dektop original....
is a useless
info. The controller chipset is important to recommend the correct driver module.
Is the computer a brand or just one that you build from scrap?

And did you find something like SATA Operations?
I mean the Bios Setup isn't as huge as the bible so you'll find something like that!
On the Motherboard there is a label that gives us an information like GA-848, the Model name. We need this in order to google for the manual and then the correct chipset for a module.

I found the following information on my system.

Phoenix-Award BIOS CMOS setup utility
BIOS version: GC11010N.86A.0303

Hard Drive: SATA 2 160GB
Processor : INTEL®PENTIUM D 2.6 GHz

Mother Board Information:

INTEL: Desktop board
Product: D101GGC
Version: AAD35788-305

When I was installing, I found the following information.

First step: I selected the graphical mode. Then it displayed the following information.

“No hard drives have been found. You probably need to manually choose device drivers for the installation to succeed.Would you like to select drivers now.

1. YES 2.No

I selected YES.
Second step: It displayed the following information.

“The following devices have been found on your system.
RTL 8139, SMC EZ card Fast Ethernet (8139too)

1. DONE 2.ADD DEVICE.

Third step: If I select either one, it is running anaconda ,red hat enterprise and finally goes to graphical mode. After selecting languages, mouse and keyboard options, then it asks, how can u select the partition either automatically or manually partition with disk druid.
If ,I select either one , it was showing the following information.

“ An error has occurred,no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems,.please check your hardware for the cause of this problem.”

After that the system is rebooting auto matically.

Custom Instructions for ahci-1.00b-rhel4-multiarch-2.tar.gz:

Download
1. Click the "Download Now" link to download the file.
2. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click the "I agree" link to accept the agreement.
3. When the File Download window appears, click "Save" to save the file to your hard drive.

Extract the archive
1. Log in as the root user
2. At a command prompt, type "tar xzvf ahci-1.00b-rhel4-multiarch-2.tar.gz to extract the files from the compressed archive
3. At a command prompt, type "cd ahci-1.00b-rhel4-multiarch-2"

Installing RHEL 4 with a driver disk
1. Create the driver disk:
Floppy: dd if=ahci-1.00b-rhel4-G-multiarch-dd.img of=/dev/fd0
-- or --
ISO: burn the ISO image to a CD-R or CD-RW disk using any CD-burning app
2. Boot to the RHEL 4 CD 1. At the "boot:" prompt, type: linux dd
3. Insert the driver floppy or CD when prompted, and continue with the install
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/SATA/ahci-1.00...iarch-2.tar.gz

but you're using rhel3 so... mmh
I know now what motherboard you own. Its ICH7 chipset so this would work but only with Rhel4 in that case. So
Quote:

There are three workaround options:

1. Switch the motherboard BIOS back to "legacy ATA mode" (parallel ATA = PATA). Complete a Linux installation. Fetch or build a kernel with support for your chipset. Switch the BIOS setting back. (Potential catch: It's claimed that Dell Optiplex GX270 and Dell Precision Workstation 360 desktop units, using Intel ICH5 SATA-I chipsets, don't support switching to legacy ATA mode. This might be true of some others.)

2. Rebuild your installer using kernel 2.4.27 or later, which includes libata, desirable since it adds many new chipsets and gives a (potential, subject to physical read limits, etc.) ~10M/s speed boost to some others compared to the quite slow 2.4.x drivers/ide set.

3. Temporarily add a regular PATA drive to your system. Install Linux onto that. Fetch or build a kernel with support for your chipset. Migrate your system to the SATA drives.

or try with ata_piix

3. At a command prompt, type "cd ata_piix-0.93c-1c"
4. Download the latest dkms RPM from support.dell.com, or install the one from the archive by typing "rpm -Uvh dkms-1.10-1.noarch.rpm". If you receive a message that a newer dkms is installed on your system already, proceed to the next step
5. At a command prompt, type "rpm -Uvh ata_piix-0.93c-1dkms.noarch.rpm" to install the device driver.

Using a Driver Disk to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux
The driver disk images are signified by the corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update release and the OS architecture. For example, GU1U2 means the image supports installations for Gold, Update 1, and Update2, while i386 or x86_64 means it supports a specific OS architecuture

1. Put a floppy disk into the floppy drive on your system
2. At a command prompt, type "dd if= of=/dev/fd0". The driver disk is now ready to use
3. Boot to your Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 installation media in the system you wish to install. At the "boot:" prompt, type "linux dd" to start the installation process.
4. When prompted, put the floppy into the floppy drive and follow the onscreen instructions.

Didn't see if you mentioned you were using RHEL3 box set or an update. I had a similar issue with the boxed set, try and get the latest update.

At least we know what's wrong now...

The sata chipset is not natively supported by the chipset.

Silicon Image (another chipset maker) is widely supported by linux.

While finding a software solution (driver) is the best and most correct solution to this, if you find yourself stuck and unable to get ahold of a working driver, you can apply a patch type solution until the your chipset is supported in future kernels.

The patch solution would be to buy a cheap SATA-150 PCI controller card with a chipset such as Silicon Image 3112 or the like.

These can be had for between 8 and 15 dollars from places like Newegg and TigerDirect or Monarch.

I also faced the same problem with RHEL 4 some months back. If you want to include a SATA HDD , while starting your installation., when booting through your first CD , it will leave you at boot:
boot: linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic
and then press enter. This will load the needed drivers for SATA.

Hi All,

As per Mr.odcheck i have written the ISO Image to the CD.

Quote:
Installing RHEL 4 with a driver disk
1. Create the driver disk:
Floppy: dd if=ahci-1.00b-rhel4-G-multiarch-dd.img of=/dev/fd0
-- or --
ISO: burn the ISO image to a CD-R or CD-RW disk using any CD-burning app
2. Boot to the RHEL 4 CD 1. At the "boot:" prompt, type: linux dd
3. Insert the driver floppy or CD when prompted, and continue with the install
I have a problem reading the ISO Image CD-Drive.When I type linux dd in the boot prompt, while it is asking for the drivers it is asking only for Flopy(/dev/hda) and not CD-ROM.How Should i fix this problem.Actually i am installing the Redhat linux 9 from CD-ROM,Now i have the CD which has the image for the Drivers. How can i specify this in my Linux.

Please help

Regards
Srini..
