lan card display

In windows, when network cables get unplugged, a cross-red sign appears on the LAN card shortcut on taskbar .. Is not there any way in linux so that if network cable get unplugged , there should be an easy view on the gnome/kde or from command prompt rather that cheking it manually....something like windows taskbar view

Yes, if you are using a recent distribution that includes NetworkManager or similar utility, you'll get a little pop-up message, and the taskbar icon changes. Check your distribution's repositories for a similar utility.
