is there a difference between the normal linux kernel and the debian kernel......i heard they are different somewhere

i'm not aware of the particular differences, but most distros will take the time to patch their kernels for various non-standard features, e.g. XFS support. and also configure it to suit the systems they are aiming at...

a low end webserver won't need any real optimization, all much the same unless you have a specific reason for certain patches
