gentoo emerge-k kde failed!!

hi everybody,
just switched to try gentoo, installed it, rebooted, and ran emerge -k kde
it seemed everything ok, when i go to start kde, it complains that libart_lgpl_2.so.2 is not in $LD_LIBRARY_PATH or not installed, i ran a search for it and its not installed (there is a libart_lgpl.so.2 but not the above), shouldnt emerge have installed all the dependencies too? anyone got any ideas on how to rectify this using emerge?

You didn't mess up...

...Gentoo 1.4 has some bits missing.
You need to:
emerge -k libart_lgpl
emerge -k fam-oss
env-update && source /etc/profile

Then kdeinit will start up OK.
Make sure it is an underscore in the first line, hyphen in the second. Lose the -k if you want to emerge from a Gentoo mirror.
