It's an ancient laptop and the button battery is worn out. Perhaps that's the cause? I use the laptop so rarely, I don't think it's worth getting a battery for.
Depending on the desktop environment, you may be able to control from some desktop setting. Provide that info and someone may be able to advise more specifically.
Also, run the following command...

sudo libinput list-devices
*You may need to install 'libinput-tools' first.
Once block of output will pertain to the touchpad device.

Hi ferrari. I haven't forgotten you. I am so busy that I haven't found some time yet to dig out the old laptop and progress with this thread. I will try as soon as I can.

You should observe a noticeable increase in the touchpad speed. You may need to adjust the value to suit. If it works as desired then you can make it permanent with a custom Xorg file eg /etc//X11/xorg.conf.d/90-touchpad.conf....
