Question Slow touchpad cursor and wrong date on Debian 10 LXDE.

Hi.

Is there a way to speedup the touchpad cursor? The mouse cursor movement is fine but I'd also like to use the touchpad now and then.

Also, whenever I bootup, I must manually set the correct date & time in order to download updates. Can this be remedied?

Thanks.

As to the date/time problem, are you running ntp or timesyncd?

Is your hardware clock setting configured correctly i.e. UTC or local?

Hi michaelk.

I think it's ntp. How can I check if it could be timesyncd?

How do I check the hardware clock settings? Do you mean in the BIOS/CMOS?

Thanks.

Check running processes for ntp but it is not installed by default.

timesyncd is not automatically started or configured to sync time either.

Check out the Arch wiki.

Lightbulb

It's an ancient laptop and the button battery is worn out. Perhaps that's the cause? I use the laptop so rarely, I don't think it's worth getting a battery for.

Bad CMOS battery would be the cause. Running ntp would solve the problem.

Any idea about the slow touchpad cursor cause/fix?

Depending on the desktop environment, you may be able to control from some desktop setting. Provide that info and someone may be able to advise more specifically.

Also, run the following command...
Code:
sudo libinput list-devices
*You may need to install 'libinput-tools' first.

Once block of output will pertain to the touchpad device.

Hi ferrari. I haven't forgotten you. I am so busy that I haven't found some time yet to dig out the old laptop and progress with this thread. I will try as soon as I can.

Hmmm....which Xorg input driver is in use for the touchpad device?
Code:
grep "Using" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Ok...libinput...that checks out as expected. Run
Code:
xinput list-props "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"
This should tell us more information about available settings and their current values.

I note that the 'libinput Accel Speed' value is 0 (by default). It is a value between -1 and 1. Try increasing it to 0.7 on the fly with...
Code:
xinput set-prop "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad" "libinput Accel Speed" 0.7
You should observe a noticeable increase in the touchpad speed. You may need to adjust the value to suit. If it works as desired then you can make it permanent with a custom Xorg file eg /etc//X11/xorg.conf.d/90-touchpad.conf....

Code:
Section "InputClass"
         Identifier "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"
         Option "AccelerationScheme" "none"
         Option "AccelSpeed" "0.7"
EndSection
