Serial line locked - by what?

I have an external modem connected to ttyS0 (Suse 10.1, KDE 3.5.1). Yast2 saw it and recognised it and configured it. When I try to send a fax with sendfax - even as root - I am told :

"cannot access fax device(s) (locked?)".

When I try to run kermit - even as root - and just set the line to ttys0 I am told that

"Sorry, write access to UUCP lockfile directory denied".

I have tried logged in as root at a console with no KDE running with the same results - so something quite low-level seems to be locking this resource up. Any ideas how I can investigate what is causing this?

Thanks

serial line locked by my own stupidity

OK - there is in fact no problem except I got the case of the "S" wrong in various commands including "ttyS0". Sorry to have used up space on the forum.

I am fully waware this is a 10 year old thread, but...

This thread helped me.

The whole point of this board is to help where it can. I was making this same stupid mistake, and might not have noticed for hours more had I not found this post.

The apology for using up space isn't necessary, and I hope this serves as a reminder to anyone else that has the sudden misfortune to have to dig through years old fora to find the help the need see that this "stupid question" was indeed not a stupid question.

Thanks
