Search the web and find a suitable icon set that you like (or make your own). Download them into the directory that all of your icons are stored. I can't remember the directory, but you can search for "icon" and the directory will show up in the list. It might be somewhere in /usr or /usr/etc or somewhere like that. Then, create your shortcuts on your desktop, panel, menu, etc. wherever you want them. Right-click on the shortcut, select properties, and you should be able to change the icon by clicking on the icon in the properties window. This will show all of the icons in your icon directory. Find the one you want and assign it to be the new icon. It is even possible to click on the drop-down list that gives the source directory for the icons and locate your own (varies from desktop environments). I have done custom icons before because there were a lot I didn't care for. Hope this helps.
