But exactly that may be the problem. It features an ancient version of the nouveau driver used for your videocard. You may be able to fix this with installing the NVidia driver (you will need version 173.X), but if it doesn't you are out of luck with that old Fedora version.
Install a newer and, most important, still supported distribution.
Well, I can see why you're still using Fedora 9: 256MB of memory! The obvious answers are
1. Install a modern distro that will run, like AntiX
2. Upgrade to 1MB
I'm not so sure about the video driver problem, though. The GeForce FX 5200 was introduced in 2003 and Fedora 9 in 2008. But I'm no expert here: this computer does quite nicely without a video card! Since you say you normally run without X, you obviously don't need one either. Try booting with the VESA driver.
the GeForce FX 5200 card was using ( not supported any more) the 173 driver
for the very old fedora 9 forget about using the kmod-nvidia
use the 173 driver
you WILL need to have already installed the kernel source for fedora 9 for the kernel you ARE running ( that last update might be fun to find)
gcc and the development tools ( including autotools )
and REINSTALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all of MESA after installing the 173.run driver ( "yum reinstall mesa*" )
ALSO rather hard to do on fedora 9 http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/arch...nux/updates/9/ http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/arch...ux/releases/9/
there was a server break in and NEW!!! security keys were released half way through the fedora 9 life span
so you might not be able to find any working yum mirrors
