Desktop Environment (GNOME) doesn't initiate after daily update (Debian Testing 64B)

Hi all!

A couple of days ago, I updated my system, like everyday with
Code:
apt-get dist-upgrade

Then, when I rebooted the computer, gdm doesn't initiate. I waited a couple of days, expecting a new update for xorg or gnome, but nothing. I would like not to wait more, but I don't what I should do. I checked dpkg.log and found some packages that maybe would be relevant:

Code:
2010-07-30 18:54:56 status installed man-db 2.5.7-3
2010-07-30 18:54:58 status installed debianutils 3.4
2010-07-30 18:55:08 status installed menu 2.1.43
2010-07-30 18:55:08 status installed man-db 2.5.7-3
2010-07-30 18:55:10 status installed liblzma2 4.999.9beta+20100713-1
2010-07-30 18:55:14 status installed man-db 2.5.7-3
2010-07-30 18:55:15 status installed xz-utils 4.999.9beta+20100713-1
2010-07-30 18:59:10 status installed gnome-desktop-data 2.30.2-1
2010-07-30 18:59:10 status installed gnome-about 2.30.2-1
2010-07-30 18:59:10 status installed gnome-keyring 2.30.3-1
201
2010-07-30 18:59:19 status installed libgnome-desktop-2-17 2.30.2-1
2
2010-07-30 18:59:31 status installed xserver-common 2:1.7.7-3
2010-07-30 18:59:31 status installed xserver-xephyr 2:1.7.7-3
2010-07-30 18:59:32 status installed xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-3
3+b1
I also tried an
Code:
startx
on recovery mode, but still nothing.

I have an ATI Radeon HD4890. Everything worked perfectly until update. I had desktop effects activated.

What should I do?

Thanks in advance.

Certainly *something* happened when you ran 'startx'. What did you see? What errors did you get?

It doesn't show anything.

When I ran 'startx', it does something too fast for seeing it and then the screen turns black.

I'm a bit lost :S

If you are using fglrx you need to reinstall the driver any time xorg or the kernel gets updated.

We would need to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated by your failed attempt to start X. Can you remotely log in from another machine after you try to startx and the screen turns black?
