Configuring X Server for 4 Screens

Hello,

I have a computer with a Matrox G450 and a Matrox G550 both using the dualhead. SO I have 4 screens running. This computer was running on RedHat 8.0. I upgrade it to Fedora Core 6.0 (Xserver 7.1.1) and I can not run anymore all screens. The G550, which is the first graphic card is running and both screens attached to it are also running correctly. But impossible to run correctly the second graphic card (G450). The /etc/X11/xorg.conf is configured (i Think) correctly and the /var/log/X.org.log gives no error which is helpful. I suppose the problem is because the driver is not supporting correctly the HAL functionality. I try installing the driver from matrox, but this one is only running with Xserver 7.0 and Fedora Core 6.0 is providing Xserver 7.1.1. I want to stay on the normal configuration with Xserver 7.1.1 and not move back to 7.0.

I need help configuring correctly my computer with all 4 screens running. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Not sure about the getting two graphics cards running, but as for Matrox...
I'm not a fan, but had to put up with them, if you're using the same graphics drivers as I was, yes it will complain that it doesn't support 7.1.1.0, but you can still get it to install if you try hard enough.
I presume you've downloaded the .run file from the matrox site, (mine was matroxdriver-x86_32-1.4.4-installer.run). You can then extract that using the command:
./matroxdriver-x86_32-1.4.4-installer.run --extract-only
Or similar.

Then, you need to change the install.sh file.
This is a diff of my modified one and the orig:
Code:
# diff matroxdriver-clean/install.sh ../matroxdriver-modded/install.sh
251a252,254
>         elif [ "$XVERSION" == "7.1.1.0" ]; then
> XPRESENT=1
> XVERSION="7.1.0"
252a256
> echo -e $XVERSION
256c260
< exit 1
---
> # exit 1
271a276
> export XINSTALLDIR=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
It was a while ago that I did it, so I'm not sure what the bottom bits are for, but the first bit is essentially adding support for the extra version. Just telling it "you DO support it". Which seemed to work, at least for 6 months (see firefox causing X to crashing thread).

then you just run the install.sh and it will install a bit better

Hope you have some luck. The other option is fill out the support for and bug them for an updated driver

Hi,

Matrox provides now a tar.gz file (matrox_driver-x86_32-4.4.0.tar.gz)which contains directly several modules (mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so), depending of the X server version. I tried installing the modules for 7.0.0 for my x server 7.1.1 and it does not work. Matrox provides also the source file. I will try from there creating the modules for my X server version.

I think I need some luck to do that correctly
