Can synaptic be used to make dependency problems easy to solve?

Sure you can also use APT, BUT ... Since APT uses the Debian repositories it's possible you download a certain dependancy that's more currect then the linspire version and it might give problems. (like one member said installing DigiKam with APT trashed his system).

Does Linpsire use special packages that are different from other distros packages.

Yes, Linspire does a lot of customization (to most of the software in CNR and to KDE and the system libraries).

I know that other distros packages will work on Linspire

Yes, they will but when they depend on someting newer then what's available on Linspire (or through CNR) you can get into trouble (like the DigiKam example).

but does Linspire have any of its own?

I think almost all software available in CNR is a custom made Deb package for Linspire (or do you mean something else).

Where can I get the phone Gaim that is in Linspire for other distros?

AFAIK, you go into the CNR warehouse (I think you can also do that without CNR from your browser) and download the source tarball for PhoneGaim (they also give back code to the Gaim project but they don't offer it on their site AFAIK). they don't offer DEB, RPM or other packages other then the CNR installation and the source tarball.
