anyway to set windows as default OS?

Hi,

I have been using Redhat sice 7(now using 9) mandrake since 9.1(now10)
Using a GRUB bootloader I have been able to modify the .conf file to set the default OS(whether dual-boot or more OS's PC)
I have 4 PC's 3 of which I have one linux distro or another as default.

I need to setup, my wife's PC with WinXP as the default OS(XP pro Lindows 4.5 dual-boot) she doesn't know how to boot from LILO(shameful I know but she is a true newb to linux.)

in /etc/lilo.conf I searched for a"default line but there is not one, here is what I see...

# Generated by jiffyboot version 5.0.205. If this file is edited, the
# system will stop modifying it. To allow the system to resume
# management of this file, remove it and run /sbin/jiffyboot.

boot=/dev/discs/disc0/disc
install=/boot/cboot.b
message = /boot/splash.lilo
map=/boot/map
fix-table
lba32
prompt
delay=70
timeout=70
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24
label=Linspire
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hdb1
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24.gz
append="mem=nopentium resume=/dev/hda1 resume_block=0x2014"
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24
label=Redetect
vga=normal
root=/dev/hdb1
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24.gz
append="mem=nopentium noresume redetect resume=/dev/hda1 resume_block=0x2014"
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24
label=Diagnostics
vga=normal
root=/dev/hdb1
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24.gz
append="mem=nopentium noresume resume=/dev/hda1 resume_block=0x2014 single"
other=/dev/hda1
label=MS_W<>®_XP

I tried to show her how to use the arrow key, but I think she is a "billy-girl" so to speak(she claims linux is to hard to use)

How can I set XP as #1 ?

each image=\boot\
label=
appear in numerical order in the lindows bootloader LILO 1.2

thanks,

Pcfixinman

lilo has a default opton just like grub. To boot windows by default:
Quote:
boot=/dev/discs/disc0/disc
install=/boot/cboot.b
message = /boot/splash.lilo
map=/boot/map
fix-table
lba32
prompt
default=MS_W<>®_XP
delay=70
timeout=70

etc.... (rest of your lilo.conf)
However, I'm not familar with jiffyboot nor linspire. You might have problems with some default script rewriting lilo.

edit /etc/lilo.conf Just do what I say here, leave the rest of lilo.conf the way it is.

OK take the last two lines:
other=/dev/hda1
label=MS_W<>®_XP

Cut an paste them, put them between:
timeout=70
(insert here)
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24

You should have this now:
timeout=70
other=/dev/hda1
label=MS_W<>®_XP
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24

Save the lilo.conf
use console
cd /sbin
lilo
chmod 644 jiffyboot
close console
reboot (restart)

That'll keep jiffyboot from rewriting the lilo.conf everytime you boot.
