recently there was a uk newspaper headline
that an IT position was advertised
and people of indian origin were prefered
which was regarded as being prejudiced
this is a forum
weird. I have had managerial roles in both diverse and er...culturally INVERSE workplaces. anytime someone that was "not with the program" was hired things would always get heated for awhile. perhaps the ad was posted with this in mind. anyways, damn what a touchy subject. i got lit for a post that wasnt nearly as charged as this. hehe
back to my rockstar and burritto.
Actually, it is now the season for students and projects in India. So you will get many more people signing on and doing a different type of project. Notice that most of them go away after about May end. Also, most serious projects have to be done on Linux.
In India, there is one state (southern Indian state of Kerala) which promotes use of Linux in governance. Mr. Richard Stallman is a frequent invitee to functions and seminars organised in this state. However, the majority by far use Windows. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives more aid to India even though there is more suffering in Africa. It would be interesting to see whether the quantum of aid is proportional to the expected market share.
... really, I think that Linux in India has a very large user base... in terms of Distro preference, I think they stick to RHEL/Fedora
... i guess that rpm -ivh <whatever> is more their kind than gdebi <whatever> or installpkg <something>...
They don't like *buntus/Debians or Slackware or Arch... RHELs CentOS or Fedoras ( it's the rpm/yum thingie... plus the amazing electric-bluish wallpapers )

That's a reasonable conclusion from the posts on LQ but I have not seen a RHEL/Fedora or met anybody that uses one (I don't get out much ). Locally ubuntu is used and I have seen a SUSE system.
The preponderance of RHEL seen on LQ might have more to do with the high value placed on certification in India than with the installed base.

I would differ a bit on that. Ubuntu has got a big share of desktop market here in India. I myself use one. If you want to talk about servers, yes may be RHEL. But I personally prefer CentOS. Fedora is used by people wanting to be developers or who are already. Workstation use of Fedora is more than Ubuntu though. And because RH certifications have got huge value here, RH/CentOS or Fedora becomes first choice.

This could also correspond to the corruption thread, but since African countries are perhaps the most corrupt in the world, it would be best to try to help in other ways instead.
