I can't speak for the whole of India (who can!) but it's maybe 2% locally on workstations, maybe more on servers. I know of a government initiative to promote its use in education but it flounders for want of a Linux skill base -- like the teachers don't know Linux.

@OP,
But why only India and Indians? This is an open forum for all and anyone can come and ask questions and get their issues solved? Just a question from a curious mind though.

What does the OP want us to answer: the OP title or the OP content? They are different It would be interesting to know why the OP used that title and asked those questions

The OP is new here and I guess may have been surprised by how many of the active members list their location as India. Some people forget that that forums and mailing lists etc. are by their nature, very international.

Cheers from Japan,

Evo2.

I guess it is possible to get the stats on linuxquestions.org by location on those web site stats places for a clue.

This should have solved the post.

Around 4" on a CD or DVD; a lot less on a USB memory stick

Hi ,
Official OS in india is Windows. i.e. Government has a tie-up with Microsoft. So Government is suggested to use "Windows OS" on all offices. Coming to educational institutions ..... I expect these are locations where students must know about GNU/linux. But that's not happening. Most of lecturers are not aware of linuxOS.
There are many users who use GNU/linux, but windows:linux ratio is bad

Obviously we are not from China.
The advertisement that you saw that preferred Indians was a bit confusing. But there could have been a lot of reasons for it. May be they had businesses in India and wanted someone who could speak our native language or someone who could relocate to India if needed?
Or may be they were just biased. Or whatever.
And this is not an organization. It is an international forum. So no nationality preferred.

Agreed. But cheap labour is not just available in India. Even China can give cheap labour. And so can your country.
But may be because Indians can speak english a bit better than Chinese?
