I use Rogers Cable Internet, because in Canada it is a monopoly. There are some areas where Shaw cable is available, but then Rogers isn't. So no matter where you are in Canada, you have no choice of cable internet provider.

Manny - if a window stays open while you are connected, then it sounds as though your isp uses their own software to make the connection. Unless you want to experiment with trying to connect in Linux, it sounds as though your isp likes to be a Windows only isp.

If you want to dial in in Linux, you may need to try a different isp. One that isn't so restrictive.

as long as you don't have a tricky winmodem...

when you have a dial up provider.. you can ring up and ask for the number,
your username and password.
where I live, the number changed, so they let everyone know, and we had to change it ourselves. nice manual connection. (yay!)

Try this:
Dial in with a terminal. Use minicomm or kppp w/ terminal authentication in linux. I think hyperterminal will work too in Win. Dial in, and enter your username & password manually. If you can get in, then it's Linux-compatible. Also you may need their DNS address.
I use Starpower. Pretty good, $14/mo.

I use bostream adsl (0.5mbit) and thinks it works good. They even have guide for configuring it with "other" os (than windows).

There's a Freeserve "option" in kppp's wizard - related info here (and "manual" settings)
