Nope, I use the open-source formats. Like .odt, .odp, etc.

Whereas most use Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop and IE; I use FF, Writer, Impress and GIMP. Unfortunately, the MicroType program (keyboarding class, lol) is stuck to MS Word... but after playing around, I bet I could make it use OOo by default by editing the Word-associated .exe's with Resource Hacker. Nevertheless, the fact they provide open-source programs as alternatives is better than most schools I've been to. It's nice that I can email them to myself and use them rather speedily on my Linux box.

And I didn't know Java was so heavily looked down upon by the open-source community. Sun is really nice to 'other' OS users. OOo, Vbox and such. It doesn't mean much if it sucks though. Maybe I'll try to learn C over the summer.

Oh, and I thought I'd share the wallpaper I use on the school computers...

[I put the GIMP, FF, Writer + Impress desktop shortcuts alongside the Linux text for added effect]

I wish we had enough room on the PC's to run Cygwin...

It's really up to you whether you want to use Java or not. Just because others don't like to use it doesn't mean you can't!

It isn't. You are making a logical error by equating a couple of dissenting voices with "the open-source community".
What really matters is that your learn the principles of programming. Any language can teach you those; it is really the teacher that makes all the difference.

Seems to. I didn't realize it's weekly new episodes again. I have 3 new episodes recorded to catch up on! I don't like the way they started "explaining" the details of the expriments just before they perform them. It's awkward and I think people get the idea from them explaining
things during the build. Other than that the show makes me jealous. Destroying things to prove a point sounds like something I was born to do! I guess that's why I run current.
