Another experiment with Arch and Firefox.
Is it actually necessary to reload Firefox after making any change in about:config?

Not in my experience. In fact, there's a handy little plugin (if you don't already know about it) called "User Agent Switcher" which allows you to change it easily on-the-fly with a GUI menu.

The downside to UAS is that it's not a permanent thing. It's useful in places (like those sites that still insist on being browser specific) but given that it occasionally causes the browser to crash on shutdown, or hang when trying to re-launch after you were using a custom UA, I'm more content to just alter the string as necessary.

Testing to see if I can get that icon...nope, doesn't work.

I tried "Firefox/3.6.8/Unix" in general.useragent.extra.firefox.
