I haven't paid any attention to MTV since Martha Quinn left. When they put on their first "programming," they stopped being MTV to me. Just as CNN is "News in name only," likewise MTV. I say that because I was there when the concepts were first launched.

MTV played music videos back-to-back with a traditional "DJ" (call 'em "VJ") format. Meanwhile, CNN played a news program 24 hours a day every 1/2 hour. It had no political commentary of any kind; just reporting. If you listened to the program twice and updates had arrived, the coverage in the repeat would not be the same as the first.

There was nothing like either of these two ideas ... and, today, the brands are still around but the programming appears to be gone for good. I miss it.

I rememeber getting Sattelite TV as a kid and loving MTV as a completely new and exciting idea. This was in the days of Kurt Loader so late on I suppose, but for a UK teeneger it was really exciting.
Then there was MTV Europe and it got a little less exciting and there was less music and more talk. The MTV UK and it got boring and the programing was all cheap talk and the occasional music video.
Now I'm both too old to appreciate the music and too cynical to see it as anything but a big advert for the sponsors.

I love MTV back in the eighties. It was the best decade of MTV back then.

I guess music takes a back seat to bling. I watched it by the way on TV on satellite.

So to make up for the fact that the VMAs have less and less to do with actual artistry,
I guess Videos like these won't make the cream cheese VMA's
