Computer Dummy Extraordinaire !!

The little red X on my Gnome Suse Linux 10 desktop disappeared, again, at the beginning of this week. I restarted my computer, but this time it did not come back.

So I went searching through the OS looking for a way to access my modem to get it to function and failed. I then tried the various repair programs and that did not work either. I finally gave up and just reinstalled my five Novell disks.

I then discovered that my original installation must have been done incorrectly because the bottom toolbar never worked before. ( Only a real computer dummy can foul up an install from disks. )

At any rate I did not remember to write down all of the links to Linux websites that I had been graciously given, nor do I remember how to disengage the Yast permission to the screensaver. Your gracious help is again requested, Please!!!

Can you explain what your question is? You seem to be rambling on about several unrelated things here.

Thanks for your response, Bulliver!!

I have been already advised on how to turn off the screensaver lock in my Suse Linux 10OS, and have done so.

I am still laughing at myself for being such a complete computer idiot that I messed up a new Linux installation from some disks; which in turn caused me to ask a lot of dumb questions. Such as what has happened to the bottom toolbar described in the handbook; and has my computer been hijacked etc. etc. etc.

I guess that makes me the dumbest member listed at this forum.

CousinLucky - believe you me, what you have described here makes you by far not the dumbest poster here. You'd have to drop some serious IQ points to join that list of luminaries.

XavierP as a moderator at LinuxQuestions you state that I am by far not the dumbest poster.

My age and life experiences have resulted in a few fine words leaving my mouth; and a few brilliant ideas being hatched, within my brain. I am however Extremely computer Illiterate, as well as Linux illiterate. I have been laughing at myself for the last two days because I ineptly and wrongly installed Linux from some store bought disks. I mean just how idiotic is that?

yea, its a shame when someone gets mad when you tell then "just use man" to get help ...

anyways, that doesnt seem like a moronic thing, i find trouble with lots of the installer programs, and hudge amounts of trouble using those "control panel"s, like from KDE or GNOME (/etc config scripts are much easyer for me, i tend to foul up the big desktops fast, either because i made a mistame, or thought i could "customise" a few things by removing that, changing a few letters here, seeing the desktop hang up ....

It's the self-proclaimed "power users" you have to watch out for. When I was a tech support bod, I always said "give me a computer illiterate over someone who thinks they know what they are doing every time[/i].

The former will follow your advice and instructions. The latter always thinks they know better and ends up doing the most damage.

The good news is that you know which camp you are in and so will listen to advice.

In my short Linux career, I purchased SUSE **twice**. I don't see it as stupid, but as part of the learning process.
It is not easy to shake the notion that, by paying for something, we can be assured that it will work and meet our needs.

One step at a time...you can learn as well as anyone

I was once playing with 'mount', in knoppix, and mounted the root drive of my HD twice. not really thinking, I removed the folder of one of the mount points, and it started asking me questions about removing write protected files, and I said yes for a little while, thinking that I wasn't actually removing files, just copies of them, since it was mounted in another place. Needless to say, it screwed up my installation quite a bit, but I learned quite a bit. I also completely deleted stuff I needed for school messing around with partitions.

So basically, don't feel bad, everyone makes stupid mistakes, and we learn from them. Some people's mistakes are just at a greater scale than others

I do not feel bad, Microsoft/linux; I am laughing out loud at my own complete computer ineptitude!! I did not grow up in a world with home computers. In my youth, black and white television sets were the equivalent of todays computers. Being able to heartily laugh at my own foolish mistakes, instead of trying to hide them, is just an indication that I am not afraid of my own limitations. I will probably still be laughing out loud at myself, over this, for quite some time.
