Suspend / hibernate problems in FC5

I've had FC5 installed for a week or so now, and I've been trying to get the suspend and hibernate functionality to work.

Hibernate seems to work; it will write memory to disk and power off, and the keyboard can't wake it up, and it will resume (fairly) reliably by powering on the computer and letting it restore to memory from disk.

However, suspend (=standby) doesn't seem to work. It seems to powerdown quite happily (and more quickly than hibernate), and the keyboard will wake it up again, but it then dumps you back into the BIOS and goes through a normal boot procedure.

Can anyone suggest why this is?

Also, what is the difference between "Suspend" on the Desktop menu, and selecting "Shut down" from the Desktop menu and clicking "Suspend"? I find that the former doesn't work (and behaves as if it's suspending), and that the latter does work and behaves as if it's hibernating.

I'm running the most recent FC5 stock kernel, 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5, but I also had this problem with the original kernel on the FC5 DVD, 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.

Also are there any graphics I can set up for hibernate? An indicator of progress through writing/reading memory to/from disk would be nice. Or even just a text-based indicator would be good.

Regards
David
