Problem with X after installation in FC4

Hey, love the sight you guys are a huge help.

I've been running gentoo on and off for a while now and I am installing a computer here at work to run Fedora and see where we can go with it, I've never really used any red hat distro before, I played with Mandrake for a while.

Here's my situation, I started the install, it probed the video card, monitor, and mouse fine. Then it tried to run anaconda, all I got was a blank screen. So I restarted and did a text based install with success. I was expecting to go into a login screen from the terminal, but instead it goes into X, either (I'm guessing like I said this is kinda new to me) gdm or something that requires x. I was wondering how I could get it to stop from automatically logging into X so I can poke around. Thanks for your help!

edit the /etc/inittab file. there will be a line with "id:5:initdefault" (probably) and change the 5 to a 3

Ok cool but how do I stop X from loading so I can edit that file? Would I have to use a Live CD or can I stop the kernel before loading X so I can get a prompt?

? you can edit the file whenever you want; you dont need to be at the terminal to do it. if you really want to, you can press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE while at your GUI to exit the Xserver and return to the console. you can then edit it from the terminal with, say, 'vi', or in the gui with gedit or any simple editor. you must, of course, be root to edit the file. then save it and reboot and it will go into the terminal.
