Happy FC4 newbie rqsts help add external FireWire HD

Just another grizzly Windows(95 to XP)er amazed at power and apparent ease of using Fedora Core 4 installed just now after wiping both drives free of Windows and all other proprietary stuff. However I do admit I face some core challenges setting everything up as Yum seems to have blocked my bandwidth getting 700MB of updates from repositories.

Challenge no. 1 is how to add empty, no filesystem yet, 160GB storage on external FireWire Seagate ST316002 3A disk drive so I can see it on the desktop and read and write to it? I've tried as root mkdir /mnt/sda and mount -t ext3 /dev/sda /mnt/sda and of course none of these do anything, probably because there's nothing there to see. Maybe we're waiting for Yum!

[EDITED with apologies to all readers immediately after posting...
Do I feel like a dummy? I wasn't typing commands as su - only as su
Well, now I've learnt the difference of [root@localhost ~]#
but I still need help as requested to know how to add/mount Seagate and partition drive.]

Don't know yet how to get command cfdisk or fdisk or fdisk -l as root to work, don't know why, but command cat /proc/scsi/scsi correctly identifies my three connected SCSI devices found:
0 is 160.0 GB Seagate drive, 1 is Plextor DVD Recorder (actually USB 2.0 connection through Belkin PCMCIA Hi-speed USB 2.0 Cardbus notebook card), and 2 is HP Mitsumi 3-1/2" floppy drive through one of four of the dock's USB 1.1 ports where this HP Pavilion notebook mostly sits.

Challenge no. 2 or is it no. 1 is to to find a partitioner like QTparted so I can partition Seagate? Haven't found a single post-install partitioner installed yet, any ideas?

Before forget, 4-pin at notebook end FireWire cable runs to 6-pin Seagate ST316002 port. The external disk is not recognized by FC4 Anaconda installer during installation unlike other distros like Ubuntu 5.10 but surely it's simple to mount and partition it in FC4?

Advance thanks to any helpful soul for any help.
