Angry Fedora Core 4 - Install Exited Abnormally

Well, thats what I get everytime I try to install Fedora Core 4. I just spent hours downloading, check summed it, everything is fine. I ran the check media in the installer just to be sure, it says "pass".

I get into the part where it says, starting anaconda (my favorite installer) installer, then it says install exited abnormally. I don't get why it does this. And I can't take a screenshot either.

Does anyone know what this is caused by, or how to fix it? Please help!

Have you any unnessesary devices connected. It is more than likely a piece of hardware causing the problem. Disconnect every piece of hardware you can and try again.

Same issue - videocard seems the problem

Hi,

i am having the same problem trying to install FC4 on my old IBM300GL desktop. All CD's passed the check, but when i try to install i get the message 'install exited abnormally'. In my case it gives some feedback regarding the video card which is a 'S3 Trio 3D'.

I have tried installing in text mode but it gives same problem. Any thoughts ... i dont want to change videocards or something like that ... it is old box and I dont want to spend any money on it. By the way FC3 installed and runs fine.

Regards,

Patrick

What I did to fix it, somewhat, was go to my BIOS, and look at the setting "OS/2 > 64MB", which is apparently for PC's running OS/2 with more then 64mb of RAM. So I turned it on. Setup got into graphical mode, I setup partitions and all, got to installing the packages, and it said could not transfer the install image to the hard drive, and told me that the hard drive might be full. I don't know how it could be full if I formatted the entire thing and made just one Linux partition. Now I'm stuck with Windows yet again.

If FC3 has worked in the past how about installing that and then doing a dist upgrade?

Hi,

i cant really try an upgrade as the anaconda installer does not even get me to the point where i can choose. it hangs almost immediately. I wrote down some more info regarding the error i get:

return video_carddblookup(sefl.carddata["name"]
file "/usr'lib'python2.4/site-packages/rhpl/videocard.py" line 34 in videocarddblookup
card=video_cardlist[thecard]
key error: 's3 trio3d\ns3 trio 64 3d"
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals
... some unmounting stuff...
you may safely reboot your system

any ideas ... i looked for the bios os2 stuff mentioned by malith but i cant find it anywhere in my bios.

thanks,

Patrick

It's crashing out on your video card. It seems to be a S3 trio card. If it's another type of card then it is not identifying your card correctly. What I would try is giving the card a wriggle and make sure it is seated properly. If it's an on board card then give your memory a wriggle to make sure it is seated fully. It just might be something not properly seated and upsetting the discovery process.

Hi,

thanks for the suggestion, but it is unlikely that is is the cause, as both FC3 boot up and work perfectly well on that same PC. I have installed and run FC1, FC2 and FC3 run on that box without any problems. This FC4 install is the first issue i have ever had.

Thanks,

Patrick

The problem is the video card. The anaconda installer must be having a problem identifying it.

Thanks for the great tip noqnoq, that certainly shed some light on the issue. However, when I follow the tips posted there (adding option pci=off) it still does not work (I will post this reply there also) as the install procedure hangs after a whole bunch of similar messages the last one being:

[<c01012b1>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0x14

any tips are very welcome as i really need to have this FC4 install properly.

thanks,

patrick
