Fedora 8 - Unable to load desktop effcts on laptop
Hi! I'm new to linux, I have fedora 8 on my Lennovo Y410 laptop. I have a 12 Deskt8mb nvidia geforce graphics card. Everytime i tryo to switch on top effects on my laptop, it says "Could not load desktop effects."
Why is this happening? I also have Windows Vista and Windows Xp installed as other os Please help
I am having the same problem but also cannot play video files because of some sort of video driver issue, i have an ati 1400x card and the latest driver from livna - xorg-x11-drv-ati.i386
[root@host ~]# glxinfo | grep rendering
unknown chip id 0x7145, can't guess.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
Hi. I havn't installed any drivers on linux.
This is my laptop config : Core 2 duo 1.8 ghz , 2gb ram, 128mb nvidia geforce ms graphics.
I tried running that 'glxinfor | grep rendering' command. It returned a negative answer. What do i do to switch it on?
Now i hav installed fedora 9. The same problem persists

You could have enabled desktop-effects with Fedora 8 by enabling a 3rd party repo such as Livna and getting nVidia driver. Since you now installed F9 there is a conflict with nVidia and the new Xorg in F9 and it may be a couple of weeks or longer before it gets resolved.
It sounds like Ryptyde is considerably more acquainted with the intricacies of Fedora itself, but the overall issue here is that you don't have any hardware accelerated drivers installed and thus can't use demanding graphics applications like Compiz.
ginda, I would suggest doing as the error message instructs and trying to get some more information as to what the problem is.
